Capdase USB Power Adapter for iPod shuffle and Other iPod
Now Capdase has released a very similar product with an even longer name - the USB Power Adapter for iPod shuffle & Other iPod* ($18.95). The computer mouse-shaped adapter is a white repackaging of an inexpensive black plastic USB charger the company previously introduced for non-iPod use some time ago. Its only adornments are a gray Capdase logo on its front, a power sticker on its back, and molded ribs on its sides. But did you notice the asterisk at the end of its name? Yes, it’s actually on the box.
That’s because the USB Power Adapter isn’t just for the iPod shuffle: it can also charge USB 2.0-friendly fourth-generation iPods, minis and photos when connected to any decent USB-to-iPod cable - including the ones packed in with these iPods. A triangular amber light on the Power Adapter’s front glows when it’s plugged in, and the battery charge indicator on your iPod works just as you’d expect it to.
Without an extra cable, you can plug the iPod shuffle directly in to the Power Adapter’s bottom for direct USB charging. While lights on both the Adapter and the shuffle indicate that charging is taking place, it takes a bit for the shuffle’s front orange light to go on and denote that charging has started. We found that both the iPod shuffle and other Dock Connecting iPods charged off of the Power Adapter without any problems.
Therefore, either as a shuffle-only charger or as a Dock Connecting iPod charger, the USB Power Adapter is $10 less expensive than Apple’s official iPod USB Power Adapter and works just as well. Then there’s the added bonus of getting four traveler-friendly power faceplates with Capdase’s offering. They’re the same four plugs included with the Universal AC Adapter, which is to say that the Capdase adapter can be used out of the box in the United States, Canada, Continental Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. By comparison, Apple’s $29 product only comes with one type of plug, and you’ll need to buy a $39 World Travel Adapter kit to use it elsewhere.
Other than the aesthetics (shape and gloss) of Apple’s part, there’s no reason to prefer it to the equally portable and more internationally useful Capdase offering. Even including Capdase’s shipping charges from overseas, you’ll likely come out at about the same price for both items. For that reason, we think Capdase’s USB Power Adapter is a highly recommendable offering, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to any current-model iPod owner who needs a wall charger.

Radius Atomic Bass, Atomic Bass for iPhone
As one might guess from the “Atomic Bass” references, all three of these headphones are very solid performers in the low-end department—at least, when they’ve been inserted correctly into your ears. Radius has gone with untraditional shapes that both look and feel good, assuming that they’re inserted and then twisted into the proper position in your ear canals, the silicone tips sealing with your ears to block out quite a bit of ambient sound. If they’re not twisted, their bass sounds anemic, leaving you with fine highs and mids. When they’re in properly, however, they provide the right quantity of bass—enough to let you hear low-end notes, but without the Darth Vader-style mid-bass-boosting effect of V-Moda’s original Vibes. By the standards of $40 to $50 earphones, these sound quite good, though the twisting motion means they’re not as easy to pop in and enjoy as the Vibes and other, simpler canalphones.
One issue does creep in with the iPhone version of Atomic Bass, however. Radius’s microphone is a step down from the one in Apple’s iPhone Stereo Headset in sound quality, possessing a similarly full-bodied, bass-rich sound, but rendering voices with slightly less clarity. More significantly, callers reported hearing a slight echo effect after each word we spoke. For this reason, we wouldn’t widely recommend the Atomic Bass for iPhone despite the fact that we really liked its sound and casing design; it may well be worth waiting for a follow-up version with a better mic and a 2008 iPod-friendly set of volume and track control buttons.
Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset
Shaped like a skinny black stick, the iPhone Bluetooth headset measures close to 2 inches long, 0.5 inch wide, and about 0.6 inch thick if you count the earpiece (It's about 0.125 inch thick without the earpiece). The headset is also remarkably light at less than an ounce, and we admit that we quite like its metal construction, glossy finish, and smooth, clean lines. Certainly, it looks more like art than a simple headset.
The controls are dead simple--in fact, there's only one button for everything. It's not obvious at first, but the multifunction button is located on top of the device. The button has a slightly curved feel and gives easily to pressure. On the back of the headset is the earpiece, which is designed to fit inside the ear, much like the old-school iPod earphones. It fits very nicely in the ear and we found it to be quite comfortable. However, the lack of an ear hook may make some people feel uneasy since it doesn't feel as secure. Also, we really would've liked to have volume controls on the headset itself. If you need to adjust the volume, you'll have to change it with your phone.
Maybe part of the reason why the iPhone Bluetooth headset is so pricey is that it comes with its own iPhone-charging dock plus a USB travel charger. The charging dock has two slots--one for the iPhone, and one for the Bluetooth headset. Similarly, the USB cable is designed with two slots as well. Pairing the headset with the iPhone couldn't be easier--simply pop in both the iPhone and the headset into the dock, and voila, they are paired to each other. This is probably the easiest pairing process we've ever experienced. Another neat advantage to using the charging dock is both the iPhone and the headset's battery status show up on the screen, so you always know how much battery life is left on the headset.
The iPhone Bluetooth headset is simple in design as well as features. You get the regular abilities to answer and end calls, but don't bet on anything like last-number redial or call mute. You can also switch calls back and forth from the headset to the iPhone and vice versa. Also, we should note that you can indeed use the iPhone Bluetooth headset with other phones, but the pairing process won't be as smooth.
Here's another note: though you won't be able to use the iPhone Bluetooth headset for voice dialing with the iPhone (since the iPhone does not support voice commands), you will be able to use it with other phones that do have voice-command support. We paired the iPhone Bluetooth headset with the RIM BlackBerry Pearl and used it to voice dial flawlessly.
Call quality was surprisingly good. We had heard numerous tales of questionable performance, but our experience told us otherwise. Yes, there is no noise-reduction technology, and voices didn't sound very natural, but we could still carry on a conversation without any noticeable static or hiss. We do have to say that the sound quality does not compare with that of the Plantronics Voyager 520 nor the Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth headset, but by normal standards, the iPhone Bluetooth headset sounded just fine. Just don't expect quality sound in an especially noisy or crowded environment since, as we mentioned, the iPhone Bluetooth headset doesn't have any noise-cancellation technology. The iPhone Bluetooth headset has a rated battery life of 5 hours and 29 minutes of talk time and 3 days of standby time.

BTI u-Link/uLink Accessory Adapter for iPod nano
Cons: Accessories are mounted backwards on nano and accessory ports are on the very tight side, both detracting a bit from otherwise solid execution; the few accessories that have problems with u-Link will largely be attributable to this odd decision. Separately, and through no fault of the adapter, battery drain of old iPod accessories may limit their usefulness with the small nano, and all voice recording accessories remain incompatible because of iPod firmware differences.
When Apple decided to remove its proprietary extended headphone ("Remote") connector from iPod nanos and 5Gs, several companies talked about releasing “old accessory adapters” - devices that would allow owners of old iPod accessories to keep using them with the newer iPods. At least a couple of major players passed on the idea, but recently BTI and Targus have provided us with actually working ipod adapters. This brief review focuses on BTI’s variously labelled u-Link / uLink ($20) for iPod nano, while a separate review looks at Targus’s 9-Pin to 30-Pin Accessory Adapter
Both of these products work in the same basic way. They provide one port to plug in an old top-mounting iPod accessory, and a plug that connects to the bottom of a current model iPod. So connected, old accessories such as remote controls, Bluetooth adapters, and FM transmitters are able to draw power from the iPod and perform their normal features. In short, the old accessory behaves pretty much as it should, even though it’s connected to a newer iPod. The only common exceptions to this rule are old voice recorders, which don’t work on new iPods at all because of firmware differences.
Other than the obvious fact that one’s a cable and the other’s a plastic bottom-of-iPod mount, u-Link’s different from the Targus Adapter in five ways. First, it comes in two nano-matching colors - Targus’s white Adapter doesn’t - and second, both of its iPod connectors are initially on the very tight side. Part of this tightness is attributable to a third, bigger electronic difference between u-Link and Targus’s Adapter: it actually connects to both the iPod’s Dock Connector and headphone ports at the same time, and stays firmly locked into both when connected. BTI’s decision to do this has two consequences: on one hand, this is actually a superior way to emulate the old iPod’s connector, allowing users of old FM transmitters and remote controls to hear changes in the iPod’s volume level, a beneficial if not necessary step when you’re using certain old accessories.
But as a fourth difference, this headphone plug also limits u-Link to being used solely with the nano, unlike Targus’s Adapter, which works with both iPods. BTI plans to sell a separate, headphone plug-less version called v-Link for fifth-generation (and possibly other) iPods. And as a fifth difference - one that’s frankly inexplicable to us, and the single biggest detractor from u-Link’s rating - BTI actually mounts your accessories backwards on the nano’s bottom. This won’t matter with most accessories, but users of Griffin’s iTrip (LCD) and the numerous old accessories with front-mounted status lights will find this puzzling, if not worse. By contrast, Targus’s cable forces accessories to dangle, but they needn’t have their front sides facing backwards. Both BTI and Targus’s devices raise one additional new concern: battery drain. Unlike newer iPod accessories we’ve tested, older ones haven’t necessarily been optimized for the nano’s smaller battery, so those expecting to get iPod- or iPod-mini comparable run times may be disappointed. This isn’t u-Link’s fault, of course, but should be borne in mind before you entirely write off the idea of buying newer, nano-specific accessories.Overall, u-Link is a good new iPod nano accessory - affordable, useful, and inoffensive-looking; its wide and proper compatibility with past iPod accessories makes it easy to recommend to nano owners. That said, its idiosyncracies - oddly tight ports and backwards accessory mounting, in particular, come across as rushed and sloppy, detracting from the user experience, and for some, its usability. Our guess is that if you need what it offers, you’ll find a way to live with these issues.

Mophie Juice Pack for iPod Touch (1st gen)
Charging
The Juice Pack comes with a USB-to-Mini-USB cable that can be used to charge the Juice Pack or to connect the iPod to the PC while it is still in the Juice Pack. This allows you to sync the iPod Touch with iTunes without removing it from the Juice Pack.
It comes fully charged, which is very nice, and takes 3-4 hours to charge after it runs down.
Battery Life
It is important to note that the Juice Pack will not charge the iPod Touch’s battery (although Mophie’s site still mentions charging the iPod, I found that it didn’t, and Mophie said that was correct and they would update their documentation). When I tried to use the Juice Pack on an iPod with a fully-discharged battery, the iPod kept “chirping” through the speakers, so I quickly gave up. However, if the iPod Touch is charged at all, the iPod will use the Juice Pack battery completely before using any of its internal battery.
To test it, I played music on the iPod Touch with the screen on (so I would know when it stopped playing). The iPod Touch, on its own, ran down in about 5 hours. I then tested with a fully-charged iPod Touch and fully-charged Juice Pack. The Juice Pack provided power for about 8 hours, and the Touch lasted another 5 on its own battery power, for a total of 13 hours, which was indeed more than double the iPod’s battery life.
Form Factor
The Juice Pack is nice to hold; it has a non-slip back, and the corners are nicely rounded. It doesn’t significantly increase the width of the iPod, but it does increase the length and the thickness. The Juice Pack sticks out below the iPod about ¾ of an inch, and the top edge of the iPod extends about a quarter inch over the top of the Juice Pack. To me, it doesn’t feel quite balanced – it’s a little top-heavy and wants to tip backwards in the hand.
The only real problem I had with the Juice Pack was disconnecting it from the iPod Touch. The edges of the iPod Touch are smooth, so it’s hard to find a place to grab it to pull it out of the battery. More than once, the iPod went flying out of my hand as it disconnected (a bad thing!) until I learned to hold it horizontally on a table and slide the iPod sideways to disconnect it.
There are two connectors on the bottom of the Juice Pack: one for the ipod mini-USB cable, and one for headphones. The headphone connection works as long as the connector is firmly seated in the jack; if it is jostled at all, the sound level decreases dramatically until you push the connector back in.
Bottom Line
I would prefer an external battery that also charges the iPod because it’s nice to be able to charge it up when a power outlet isn’t available, then disconnect the iPod and use it without the bulk of the battery. The Juice Pack, however, works as advertised, and it does extend the battery life of the iPod Touch in a form factor that is elegant and doesn’t add much to the size of the iPod.
Pros: More than doubles the battery life of the iPod Touch, is nice to hold, and doesn’t add too much bulk to the iPod.
Cons: The battery pack takes a relatively long time to charge, doesn’t charge the iPod Touch’s battery, and is difficult to disconnect from the iPod Touch.

V-Moda Bass Freq earphones
The Bass Freq earphones' main style point is the brightly colored earbuds and cable. You can choose from eight colors: black, blue, camo, green, orange, pink, red, and white. The camo version features an olive cable and orange earbuds with olive accents, but the rest of the styles are uniform in color but for a bit of chrome accenting. The result is a fashion-forward design that can blend with your favorite outfit. And though I didn't expect the stylishness to make much of a difference in practice, it did: the colorful cord is much more jewelrylike--and thus looked significantly more stylish running down the front of me--than the thick white cord of my Shure E4cs. Also, though the 46.5-inch cable is insufficient for most at-home use (with your computer or stereo, for example), I found it to be the perfect length for on-the-go use.
As is standard for sub-$100 headphones, the Bass Freq ipod earphones come with few extras, but I was surprised and pleased to find V-Moda's Modawrap in the box. It's a simple-but-handy tool for stowing your cord--and you'll want to use it, because the Bass Freq's ultrathin wire tangles easily. There are also three sizes of silicone ear fittings to help ensure a comfortable fit and provide the necessary seal to provide the deep bass that's implied by the product's name.
As for that implication, the Bass Freqs truly live up to their name. These 'phones really thump on the low end--just make sure you get a good seal in your ear. And I was pleasantly surprised by the overall sound quality of the 'buds, especially considering their low price point. The bass was heavy, but it didn't overshadow the mids and lows in most cases (a handful of rock songs had a slightly muffled quality to them). In general, music sounded rich, warm, and detailed. Hip-hop, jazz, and electronica tracks really shined; even certain rock songs were great--during the Clash's "London Calling," I felt like I was in the studio, and Depeche Mode's "Strangelove" sounded fantastically deep and dark.
Like their sibling, the Remix M-class, the Bass Freqs are also a surprisingly loud set of earbuds--they amplify the music from the sound source by a significant amount compared to other small earphones (iphone earphones). This factor combined with the many color options make this a perfect set of earphones for the Creative Zen Micro Photo series of MP3 players.
